Eco-design
The environmental aspect of the design of our batteries is regulated by several mandatory restrictions of use of chemicals. This purely legal approach is now complemented by the Life Cycle Analysis concept.
The mandatory restrictions on the use of chemical substances which may be used in batteries are governed by:
The RoHS European Directive (2002/95/CE) whose scope does not cover batteries, but which has nevertheless generated some design changes within the Saft product range
The European Directive on batteries and accumulators (2006/66/EC) which mandates several restrictions on the use of chemicals in batteries. The Saft product range is in compliance with these restrictions.
The REACH European regulation (CE 1907/2006) which requires of manufacturers or importers to register many substances within a schedule which is mainly driven by the volume imported or manufactured. Saft is in the process of implementing a compliance plan so that our Group is ready by 2010, as the first mandatory Registration period opens.
Details are provided on the way Saft is complying with each one of these laws and regulations in the individual sections of this site dedicated to each legal instrument.
Regarding the implementation of the Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) methodology on our products, Saft has recently started using this tool and we are now analyzing our most representative products in their main segment of use.
As new developments are being carried out, Saft will strive to quantify and communicate to its customers how the new product ranges improve their environmental performance.
